This Omega 6 fatty acid is the active ingredient in evening primrose oil and the amount present determines the quality and price of the oil. There is a big variation between oils and ours is carefully selected and then tested to ensure it contains at least 10% GLA. Our tests indicate that not all the products available meet the level of GLA declared on the label.
Evening primrose (Oenothera), biennial and perennial plants in the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). The species are native to South and North America, but are now established in many countries. The plant has erect stems, which flowers come in terminal buds. The plant can be three to five feet high. The flowers are bright yellow and have a calyx tube. The seeds of most species ripen from August to October. The capsule contains approximately 200 seeds from which a valuable oil is extracted. The plant was rediscovered in 1749 by the Swedish botanist Peter Calm. The oil from the seeds of evening primrose is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. The content of gamma - linolenic acid can be up to 14%.
