A long-term study confirms that regular consumption of resveratrol can delay cognitive decline in postmenopausal women by ten years.  This is the first peer-reviewed publication of the two-year Resveratrol Supporting Healthy Aging in Women (RESHAW) clinical study conducted by the University of Newcastle in Australia.

In this double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study, 129 postmenopausal women between 45 and 85 years of age received either placebo or 75 mg of trans-resveratrol twice daily for 12 months, after which the intervention groups were switched for 12 months.  Effects on cognition, blood circulation in the brain, CVR (cerebrovascular responsiveness) and cardiometabolic markers such as blood pressure, diabetes markers and fasting lipids were examined.  Compared to placebo, resveratrol improved overall cognitive performance (P <0.001) and decreased the decrease in CVR on cognitive stimuli (P = 0.038).  The latter effect was associated with a reduction in fasting blood glucose (r = −0.339, P = 0.023).

This long-term study confirms that regular consumption of resveratrol may improve cognitive and cerebrovascular functions in postmenopausal women with the potential to slow cognitive decline due to aging.  One of the authors reports, "The observed improvement in cognitive performance with resveratrol may reverse the 'cognitive age' by up to 10 years."  The research team suspects that the effect of resveratrol is due in part to improvement in blood epithelial function, which blood circulation improves.
